The Internet is just the highway for information. Information can be accessed from one computer by another over the Internet in many ways.
Here are some of the other common programs used on the Internet:
Web Browser: The computer program you are using now is called a "Web browser." It allows you to look at Web pages.
E-Mail: Electronic mail allows you to send a typed message from your computer to another person's computer.
Gopher: A Gopher program let's you find information stored on another computer. It has some of the same capabilities as a Web browser but without the graphics, sounds, and color.
FTP: FTP stands for File Transfer Protocol. FTP programs allow you to copy information from one computer to another across the Internet.
Telnet: A Telnet program allows you to use your computer to control another computer from a distance, as if you were sitting down in front of it.
