What is sodium?
What is weight-bearing physical activity?
What is heavy drinking of alcohol?
Regular weight-bearing activities such as strength training, walking and dancing can trigger your body
to deposit calcium in your bones. That makes them stronger and denser.
Too much sodium can compete with calcium for absorption, so less of the bone builder
calcium gets into your bones. Sodium is found in fast foods and salty snacks.
Heavy alcohol drinking is linked to weaker bones. This may be because heavy drinkers don't
get enough calcium in their diets. Calcium sources include tofu, canned sardines and salmon
with bones, turnip greens and foods in the milk group.
